He followed with ease, a hand coming up to rub at his eyes briefly. He'd been working for the last several hours on something or other so the break, no matter how grim the subject matter, was more than welcome. He hummed in agreement as Edgar relayed the problem.

"Absolutely." Having a guy who could be severely damaged by the stuff be the head of supply and demand? Definitely, definitely not a smart idea. "So my next question for you is how do we fix it?" He looked over the baron for a moment, tilting his head. "I could build you armor, maybe, but that probably won't help too much in terms of keeping the effects off of you."

"Not to mention that the last time I wore armor, I was lucky King Otar prefers to have it enameled over so no iron actually touched me. Iron's worse than the blood granite, but that doesn't make it pleasant. Still... I don't think armor is going to send the right message." Edgar shook his head.

"I'd rather we take a closer look at the material. Small quantities, nothing too dangerous, even for me. Learn about it. Test its limits. See if there's a way to buffer it or develop an immunity of some sort. After all, if I'm going to be the only one with access to it, I should know everything about it, don't you think?"

"Okay, so no armor." That was a good thing to note and just one more thing to file away into his memory bank. He perked up considerably though at the word "test" and he looked up at Edgar as they continued to walk.

"Great idea." It'd be a decent break from his own projects, anyway. "I have enough tools that we can use to break everything down and start testing out the chemical properties of it and seeing what we can extract..." The last few things were mumbled to himself as his thoughts moved ahead. "Let's do it. Do we have a piece already that we can start looking at?"

"I had a little bit brought into the facility already. Just a handful. Literally. It's not like I can't get more if we need it, though."

Sure enough, sitting on one of the lab tables was a little bundle about the size of an apple or a baseball wrapped in cloth.
"I had to wrap it up, just for safety. Touching it... Well, direct contact should probably be kept to a minimum in my case. I'll let you unwrap it."

"I know very little about it, but it's valuable to certain people, and that, at least, is economically good news for the spire. But, whatever we learn about it... This might not be something we want to be sharing with anyone outside this facility, you understand?"

"Well then you'll be happy to know that most things that go on in here are never shared with anybody outside of the facility," he assured him as they ended the lab. Quickly striding across the room, he hardly wasted time before unwrapping the cloth. He was being careful though, just in case this somehow negated his own magic.

"I don't know a lot about the blood granite either. Why's it so valuable? Do we really know? Other than the whole 'damaging to magic-users' thing."

"You know, I tried asking that. Never did get a straight answer," Edgar mused. "But, if we can succeed with this... I think we could make it a lot more valuable, and useful to more people."

He looked intently at the rock on the table.
"I know that the magic-dampening powers are cumulative. The more granite you have, the more effective it is. But it can't drown out everything. Powerful being like the monarchs might be inconvenienced by it, but not harmed. It was also suggested once to me that small amounts added to restraints could keep magic users in check. But I haven't tried this, really."

"Which means more money for us and more ways we can utilize it in our projects. I like that idea." He crouched down to eye-level to examine the blood granite, fingers running over it carefully before he frowned. To him, it was still just a piece of rock.

"So it's like kryptonite to some people and food poisoning to others. Something that could be made for imprisonment in some cases but might be useless against somebody more powerful. Sounds like what we really need to do is figure out the limits without causing a lot of damage to our test subject. Maybe use it against a magic object and see how much of it negates the power. What do you think?"

"It's worth a try. But, it should probably be a magic object that we can stand to lose."

Edgar considered.

"Maybe one of the roses? I could bring some in from outside... That's probably about as safe as anything."

"How much power is in one rose? We might want to test on a few of them if we're going that route." That isn't to say it was a bad idea. Actually, he seemed rather amicable to it.

"Mostly just enough to give them something of a mind of their own. It's technically fairy magic. Not a lot, but... it's a start. And we can afford to use a few roses for the cause, instead of something more... precious."

He shrugged.
"Is there something else you would like to use?"

"Nah, I think that'll work. Think we can use maybe four of them? Couple of them for control tests and a couple for actually testing out the properties. I don't know a lot about fairy magic or how it really works but it should give us enough of an idea so we can start moving on to something bigger."

With his mind made up, he stands upright again away from the granite. "Where do we get them?"
